Walking

Country Lane Walk straight out of the Gatehouse door in to the unspoilt spectacular scenery of the Northumberland Nation Park and its surrounds. Take an easy sedate route to the 10th Century Church or go and explore the hills, valleys and woodlands surrounding Alnham, all teeming with bird life and wild life. Visit the Hazelton Rigg Wood in late spring/early summer and witness the massive carpet of bluebells, keep your eyes peeled for king fishers and wood peckers, otters, badges and deer. Whether walking or cycling, the information pack in the Gatehouse suggests where to go, or you can plan your own routes on the maps provided, be intrepid and explore with map in hand or even just be in open right to roam country and then map where you went on your return.

Cycling

The Sandstone Way
The Gatehouse is on national cycle route 68 and with miles of restricted byways and quiet country roads; there is nowhere better for the lazy summer ride or and more invigorating cross country round trip. Bring your own bike or mountain bike without a worry - your bikes can be securely stored at the Gatehouse .

Stargazing

Kielder Observatory Auroa - Picture: Northumberland Tourism Stay and Gaze Northumberland National Park Authority, Kielder Water & Forest Park Development Trust and Kielder Observatory Astronomical Society were awarded the title of Northumberland Dark Sky Park in December 2013. This means nearly 1500 square kilometres of Northumberland has been designated an area to conserve and enjoy, making Northumberland, Europe's largest Dark Sky Park.

Witness the Northumberland dark skies and see for yourself the glorious unpolluted night skies. The Gatehouse has everything you need for Stargazing - binoculars, reference books,flasks for those winter warmers and snuggly blankets. All you have to do is light the chimenea and have your evening under the stars. We can even arrange to hire your own personal expert should you want some pointers.

Tennis

With a private tennis court not 100 meters from your door complete with racquets and balls available it doesn't matter if you're a budding Murray or simply want a knock up with family and friends the court is there for your exclusive use along with a cosy, romantic summer house for that well deserved post match drink.

Riding

Horse Riding
Riding, stabling and turnout available Winter, Spring, Autumn or Summer allowing you to bring your own horse/pony and explore the magnificent countryside all around or venture further to spectacular beaches. We have bridle paths galore, big loose box stabling, feed, tack and boot rooms. There are acres of turn out in grassy fields and ample space to park your trailer or lorry. You can choose to walk, trot or gallop!

Fishing

Fishing
With in a few miles there are two well stocked fisheries Thrunton Long Crag Fishery and Caistron Lake. Each provide everything you would expect from a top rate trout fishery fantstatic for both the seasoned fisherman and the newcomer alike. Lessons and expert tuition can be booked in advance, rods and equipment provided or just contact them direct and book your session for a relaxing peaceful time away from it all.
